Details:

Performances of The Indian Queen are scheduled to take place at the Grand Théâtre de Luxembourg on Friday 21 and Saturday 22 April 2023 at 20:00.

This Opéra de Lille production of Henry Purcell’s semi-opera The Indian Queen is in English, with French and English surtitles. By the time of his death in 1695, the 17th-century English composer had not finished adding musical episodes to the original play by John Dryden and Robert Howard. For this 2019 production, leading director Guy Cassiers and Le Concert d’Astrée's Emmanuelle Haïm (musical director of 2022's Dido & Aeneas) have created a new complete version.

Against the backdrop of the Inca-Aztec war, a family feud is ignited, fuelled by pride and passion. In his modern-dress version, in which he presents the Aztecs as anti-globalisation protesters, Guy Cassiers also screens silent images of contemporary Middle-Eastern conflicts.

The duration of the performance is two and a half hours (plus an intermission).

Ticket prices start at €25 (€8 for young people; Kulturpass welcome).
