The musical comedies, which are from a 20th Century genre, can be considered as the evolution of classical operas.
In this musical form, the characters tell a story through song lyrics which are often accompanied by dance choreographies.
Amongst the first examples, there are 2 works from the famous composer George Gershwin of which there are 2 plays that have become famous independently from the musical for their interpretation by leading jazz singers.
The term “Musical Comedy” generally refers to the genre that became so popular in the West End of London and Broadway, of which the success has repeatedly been crowned by a filmmaking. This is the case for one of several works presented in the first part of the program, including My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music released in 1964 and 1965, with Audrey Hepburn and Julie Andrews in the leading female roles. These works were first shown in theatre and then shot, which allowed them to get the notoriety throughout the world.
Almost all comedies of the proposed programme have been transformed into filmmaking after the success of the theatrical version. This is the case for West Side Story, a modern version of the story of Romeo and Juliette; of “Chicago” of which the theatrical version dated from 1975 became famous by the casting of the film from the 2000s with Richard Gere, Catherine Zeta Jones and Renée Zellweger, and also “A Chorus Line”, a comedy that tells the story of a group of artists preparing an audition for the role in a musical.
“Les Miserables” is one of the pillars in the history of musical comedy. Its representation in the theatres of London, Broadway and throughout the world has never been interrupted, and a cinematic representation was performed in 2012 by and exceptional cast.
The other two works in the programme were written by one of the main representatives of the current panorama, Andrew Lloyd Webber, who is the author of several comedies that have enchanted the public throughout the world such as, Jesus Christ superstar, The Phantom of the Opera, and although it hasn’t achieved the success of the first part, this comedy is an excellent example of the union between different arts, in particular music, dance, and acrobatics.
The music pieces chosen for each comedy tunes are representative of the style and the narrative.
