Details: On 28 March and also on 25 and 26 April, the Choir of the University of Luxembourg will present for the first time, at the time of the Passion, the new composition by Philip Partridge: a contemporary variation of the famous "Stabat Mater," a Latin poem of the Middle Ages expressing the pain of the Mother of Jesus Christ facing the death of her son.
The poetic value and deep humanity of the text from the thirteenth century which is attributed to Jacopone da Todi, has already inspired many composers such as Pergolesi, Dvorak and Schubert. Philip Partridge, vocal coach of the choir of the University and a Franco-American composer living in Luxembourg since 2008, has made this work a piece for mezzo-soprano and chorus, bass clarinet, double bass and percussion.
"This text sounds like a call to face the worst pain with compassion, to be placed in the acceptance of his own condition," said Philip Partridge. "Indeed, the importance of this text lies not only in what he expresses but also and just as much in what he does not express: anger, revenge or resentment toward those who have caused suffering. "
This work by Philip Partridge is primarily vocal, sensitive and compassionate. It does not seek to stage the text, but to enter a contemplative and meditative dimension to access inner peace once transcended the expression of pain. Musically, the harmony is based on the range that the composer multiplies and overlaps in different ways, as the search for a state of stability and rest.
This composition will be performed by 40 singers of the choir of the University conducted by Julia Pruy and the mezzo-soprano Luise Partrigde-Mauro. The concerts will take place on Saturday, 28 March at 20:00 at the Church of St. Jean in Luxembourg-Grund, on Saturday 25 April at 20:00 at the Church of St. Michael in Mondorf-les-Bains, and on Sunday 26 April at 17:00 at the Church St. Henri in Esch-sur-Alzette. Admission is free.
