Details: This year’s edition of the Rock the South amateur band competition will take place on Saturday 13 December, beginning at 19:30 at the Home St Hubert in Pétange and will be organised by the local municipality, along with the National Youth Service (SnJ) and Rockhal’s Resource Centre.
Since its inception in 2009, the contest aims to promote young and local rock bands from the South of Luxembourg, by giving them the stage on which to perform and showcase their talent.
In order to participate, a majority of band members must be residents of the Grand-Duchy and must be at least 15 years-old, with the average age of the band not exceeding 25. Stage time is limited to 30 minutes and any songs that convey racism, homophobia or sexism will automatically lead to disqualification from the contest.
A listening jury composed of music professionals and enthusiasts will evaluate the performance of each band and select the winner – who will receive a package worth €1,000, including recording sessions at Rockhal Studio, a project monitoring by the Rockhal’s Resource Centre team and a chance to perform at the SnJ’s “On Stéitsch 2015” festival. In addition to this, the winners will perform at next year’s edition of Rock the South, as tradition.
District 7 (last year’s winners) and Go By Brooks, local bands that have gained in popularity and success will be there as special guests to perform and encourage the new bands. District 7, who have recently released their first EP, will also share their experience from last year. Headlining and closing the evening, the four-member band Go By Brooks will perform some of their material ahead of the release of their first EP, set for early 2015.
The deadline to register for Rock the South 2014 is 1 December and five bands will be selected to participate.
