Details: The 5th European Summit on the Future Internet is taking place on 12 - 13 June 2014 at the Conference Centre of the Jean Monnet Building, Rue Alcide De Gasperi in Luxembourg.

It will be opened by Georges Bingen, European Commission’s representative in Luxembourg, Björn Ottersten, Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Security, Reliability and Trust (SnT), Mark Hansen, Undersecretary, Ministry for Higher Education and Research and – via a video maessage – Neelie Kroes, Vice-President of the European Commission, on 12 June at 09:15.

Discussion on the future shape of the Internet has been raging for some years now. Issues debated have included the Internet of connected objects, trust and privacy in the online world or the right to be forgotten. The European Summit on the Future Internet provides a unique opportunity to debate this future. It is a marketplace for discussions on the status and trends of the technologies and applications of the Future Internet with the participation of key policy makers, business leaders and academics.

“With specific focus on this European dimension, industry and public sector need a broader perspective on chances and challenges to reap the benefits of the future,” says Joao Schwarz da Silva, Research Fellow at SnT and organizer of the summit: “On the other hand especially regulatory authorities have to take care for a balanced and innovative regulatory and policy reform.” In light of the recent developments regarding privacy and security in the Internet, the opening session of the summit will bring together a high level round table which will address the key issues which the Internet is confronted with.

“Security, trust and privacy are the essence of the Future Internet,” states Prof. Björn Ottersten: “We are looking forward to the discussions with the participants of the conference. This exchange of ideas will set the scene for the forthcoming research and development landscape in the context of Horizon 2020, the new EU Research and Innovation programme.”
