The number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM employment agency in Luxembourg has increased by 31.1% over one year.

As of 30 April 2020, the number of available resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 20,253 (up from 18,398 the previous month). Over one year, this represents an increase of 4,800 individuals, or 31.1%. This increase, recorded at the height of the COVID-19 health crisis, was mainly due to a drop in outflows, rather than an increase in new registrations.

In fact, during the month of April 2020, the ADEM looked at 1,796 new resident jobseekers' applications - decrease of 18.3% compared to April 2019. At the same time, the number of closed applications fell from 2,512 to 884 over one year.

In addition, ADEM, which was unable to accommodate each jobseeker during the month of April, had to adapt its monitoring of jobseekers. These new rules no longer make it possible to keep jobseekers files as up to date as precisely as before the crisis.

On the one hand, the number of beneficiaries of an unemployment measure decreased by 543 people, or 12.7%, compared to April 2019. On the other hand, the number of new measures was very small last month.

During the month of April 2020, employers reported 1,895 vacancies to the ADEM, which represents a decrease of 43.2% compared to April 2019.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate, as calculated by STATEC, stands at 6.9%.
