On Friday 11 October 2024, Luxembourg's Minister of Labour announced details of the new bill to amend Article L.231-4 of the Labour Code, relating to Sunday work.
This bill proposes to allow employees to work up to eight hours on Sundays, while receiving a salary increase (70%) for all hours worked. This applies to all businesses defined in Article 1 of the amended law of 19 June 1995, which regulates the closure of retail stores in commerce and crafts.
Sunday work of up to eight hours reflects current developments in a changing society and world of work, by offering employees the opportunity for a better work-life balance.
By guaranteeing the wage increase, the government reaffirms its commitment to protect the purchasing power of households in Luxembourg, while responding to the growing needs of businesses for better adaptation to economic realities.
The Minister of Labour believes that this reform offers a fair balance between work flexibility and respect for employees' rights, while reaffirming its commitment to constructive social dialogue.
