The number of jobseekers registered with the ADEM employment agency in Luxembourg has increased by 6.5% over one year.

As of 30 November 2019, the number of available jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 15,351. Over one year, this represents an increase of 943 individuals, or 6.5%. On the other hand, the number of available non-resident jobseekers registered with the ADEM was 2,358 at the end of November 2019, a decrease of 6.8% compared to November 2018.

Over the course of November 2019, the ADEM opened 2,435 new applications from resident jobseekers, a decrease of 5.2% compared to the previous year. In addition, the agency opened 486 new applications from non-resident jobseekers, which represents a decrease of 10.8% over one year.

In addition, the total number of beneficiaries of employment benefits in Luxembourg was 4,277 at the end of last month. Over one year, this represents an decrease of 7 individuals, or 0.2%.

During the month of November 2019, employers reported 2,891 vacancies to the ADEM, which equated to 245 or 7.8% fewer posts than in November 2018.

The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate calculated by STATEC thus rose to 5.4% (0.1% higher than in October 2019 and 0.2% higher than in November 2018). According to the ADEM, this rise in unemployment comes at a time when employment is still increasing at a sustained pace (3.7% over one year, according to the latest figures from STATEC). The sharp increase in the number of job seekers is attributed to a backlash following the exceptional drop observed at the end of 2018 (due to the new registration procedure for job seekers). The ADEM has stated that this has led to a time lag in the inclusion of new registrations in the statistics.
