The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs has announced that, in light of the military operations launched by Russia against Ukraine, the Luxembourg Government is strongly discouraging its nationals and residents from travelling to Russia.
In the current context, air connections with Russia have been strongly impacted. Several Russian airports, including those near Ukraine, are closed. All member states of the European Union (EU) have closed their airspace to Russian aeroplanes and airlines. Luxembourg's Foreign Ministry warned that, due to the increasing restrictions on air traffic between Europe and Russia, there is a real risk of being stranded in Russia for an indefinite period. This risk can involve all sorts of unforeseeable consequences, including of a financial and consular nature. The operation of European payment cards in Russia may, for example, be affected by the situation.
The government also encouraged Luxembourg nationals and residents in Russia to exercise increased vigilance. They are advised to keep themselves informed of the development of the situation, to avoid mass gatherings and to heed the instructions of the authorities. It is also recalled that photographing or filming military equipment or installations is strictly prohibited in Russia.
