With the growth recently and currently experienced at Lux-Airport, both in terms of passenger numbers and retail and catering facilities, the airport is currently planning further expansion with a second terminal.
While the detailed schedule is not yet defined - a study is currently being undertaken - it is understood that Terminal B may be up-and-running before the end of this year.
The Terminal B building is already constructed (2004) but the walkway that connects it to the current Terminal A is only half-constructed. In addition to this construction work to be done, it is understood that much intergration of systems, including IT systems, will be required before Terminal B will be operational.
Presently there are 18 departure gates for Schengen (8) and non-Schengen (10) destinations, including 5 bridges for walk-on and walk-off access to aircraft, with another 10 again possible with Terminal B.
The original capacity of Lux-Airport when it was opened in 2008 was stated to be 3 million passengers annually. With Lux-Airport recording 2.69 million passengers in 2015 and projecting a growth of 6% for 2016, this 3 million capacity is likely to be reached shortly. However, Johan Vanneste, CEO of Lux-Airport, explained to The Luxembourg Chronicle today that the airport could cater for more passengers than the "3 million capacity" if more airlines/flights are scheduled outside peak times.
