On Wednesday 22 January 2025, the City of Luxembourg held an information evening on the project "KIDS CITY MAP" at the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.
The event, which was aimed at parents of students in cycles 3.1. to 4.2. of Luxembourg City’s primary schools, took place in the presence of the College of Mayor and Aldermen, the IKS Mobilitätsplanung engineering firm and the municipal services involved (Traffic, Education, Topography and Geomatics, Information and Communication Technologies).
During this event, the "KIDS CITY MAP" project (a city plan by children and for children) and the different stages of its design, from the citizen participation process to the finalisation of the city plan, were presented.
Since the last edition of such a city map for children, more than fifteen years ago, the urban landscape has changed significantly. New districts have emerged and many developments, particularly in terms of infrastructure safety, have been carried out around schools. New schools, school foyers and sports facilities have opened their doors and playgrounds and leisure areas have been created or renovated.
The objective of the "KIDS CITY MAP" is to produce a map of Luxembourg City for the children of the capital, listing the infrastructures dedicated to them and the various places of interest for children (sports and cultural infrastructures, playgrounds, sports and recreation areas, etc.) located in the capital, as well as major landmarks allowing children to find their way more easily. In addition, the project aims to develop a series of measures to be implemented, to best meet the needs and expectations of children and their parents in terms of quality facilities and to update the map by filling in any gaps previously identified in the neighbourhoods.
The participation of pupils, their parents and the teaching staff is at the heart of the project. Some 2,200 pupils from cycles 3.1. to 4.2. of primary schools in Luxembourg City are invited to participate in the project, by indicating on an interactive map their daily routes, the places they consider unsafe and the places they like to visit. Parents will have the opportunity to get involved in the project by participating in an online survey accessible from the end of February 2025.
After evaluating the responses, the main results will be integrated into the "KIDS CITY MAP" project which will be presented to the public at the end of 2025, together with the series of measures to be implemented to create a city that is better adapted to children and to make the capital even more welcoming and friendly for families.
