The City of Luxembourg (Ville de Luxembourg - VdL) has announced various events to commemorate the Solidarity Day of World Heritage Cities on Thursday 8 September 2022.

On 8 September 1993, the Organization of World Heritage Cities (OWHC; Organisation des villes du patrimoine mondial - OVPM) was born in Quebec, Canada. Since the inscription of the old quarters and fortifications of the City of Luxembourg on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 1994, the City of Luxembourg has been a member of the OWHC.

As a commemoration, this day is celebrated from its foundation under the flagship of the Solidarity Day of World Heritage Cities and invites residents and visitors on this occasion to exchange and discuss around the theme of urban heritage protection.

UNESCO Walk

As part of the celebration of this day of solidarity which will take place on Thursday 8 September 2022, the Luxembourg City Tourist Office (LCTO), in collaboration with the Luxembourg City Museum, will offer guided tours of the UNESCO circuit. This walk immerses the visitor in a natural environment to discover or rediscover the remains of the old city. Visitors can thus better understand the important role that the city played in European history and understand the reasons why the city of Luxembourg has been included on the List of the Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 1994. The walk passes halfway up the fortifications via the Parc de la Pétrusse, the Corniche, the ramparts and crosses the old city.

Participation in the walk is free, however registration via the booking form on www.lcto.com is mandatory (subject to availability). Three tours are offered:

  • Tour in Luxembourgish: 11:00
  • Tour in English: 14:00
  • Tour in French: 15:00

In addition, visitors will have the opportunity to attend a presentation of the UNESCO Visitor Centre and to receive one of the free copies of the OWHC's city recipe book.

"World heritage on the plate" - discovering culinary world heritage

A novelty has been added to the programme for Solidarity Day: 600 copies, respectively 200 copies in English, French and German, of the cookbook "World Heritage on the plate" will be distributed at the Visitor Centre at the Luxembourg City Museum (while stocks last). Thanks to the efforts of the Town Planning, Cultural Coordination and Reprography services of the City of Luxembourg, as well as the support of the City of Regensburg, the translation of the book into French was possible. The cookbook is also available on the OWHC website via: https://www.ovpm.org/2022/06/09/owhc-recipe-book-now-available-in-french/.

The City of Luxembourg among the 22 winners of the exhibition “It’s good to live in…”

As part of the 16th World Congress of the OWHC, which will take place from 6 to 9 September 2022 in Quebec, a photography contest has been launched. Among nearly 60 applications received, 22 cities, including the City of Luxembourg, were selected to participate in the exhibition with the theme "It's good to live in..." and showing on each panel an aspect of the city's quality of life. The photograph with which the City of Luxembourg applied comes from photographer Alfonso Salgueiro and was made available by Luxembourg for Tourism. The photo is accompanied by a quotation from Johann Wolfgang von Goethe: "Here we find such a harmony of grandeur and grace, of gravity and gentleness, that it is a pity that Poussin had not had the opportunity to employ his magnificent talent in reproducing such a landscape" (Goethe on Luxembourg, “Campaign in Frankreich”, 15 October 1792).
