The sun was shining down on the Schueberfouer over the weekend as the 679th edition got underway in the Glacis car park in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg.

Last Friday marked the opening of this year's traditional Schueberfouer in Luxembourg City. Once again, the opening day attracted the crowds, who enjoyed excellent summer weather as they explored old and new stands and rides and dined on local and international cuisine.

Typically, the event draws some 100,000 people per day, although it is still too early to confirm the exact numbers for the opening weekend, according to the Ville de Luxembourg (VdL) and the Fédération Nationale des Commerçants Forains (FNCF) at a press conference held today in the fairgrounds. What the organisers did confirm was that the fair once again got off to a successful start, helped in part this year by the favourable weather forecast.

The organisers recalled that the 2019 edition of the Schueberfouer features another jam-packed programme, with the next highlight being tomorrow's "Mayor's Day". On this occasion, some 30 Luxembourgish mayors will be on hand to serve guests in the fair's various restaurants, from 19:00 until 22:00. Proceeds from their work will be donated to the Red Cross Luxembourg. Other activities this week include "Family Day" on Wednesday, when visitors to the fair can enjoy up to 30% off normal ride prices. Thursday will be Queen's Day at the fair, featuring Luxembourg's beauty queens and wine and beer queens, followed by "Biergerdag" (Citizens' Day) the following Thursday 5 September. Similarly, visitors can enjoy the rides for half the normal price on the last day of the fair, Saturday 11 September, before enjoying the closing fireworks over the Pont Grande-Duchesse Charlotte at 22:00.

On Monday 9 September, the FNCF will announce the winners of the "Lämmy Spill" raffle, the proceeds of which will go towards supporting victims of the recent tornado in Pétange and Kaerjeng in southern Luxembourg.

Commenting on price increases, FNCF President Charles Hary highlighted the possibilities of enjoying the Schueberfouer for free (or for very little money); he suggested using the P&R parking and bus services for free and recalled that entry to the fair remains free of charge. Patrick Goldschmidt, member of the college of aldermen of the Ville de Luxembourg, added that prices were "respectively cheaper" in Luxembourg than in similar amusement parks in other countries.

The Schueberfouer runs until Wednesday 11 September from 14:00 to 01:00 Mondays to Thursdays, 14:00 to 02:00 on Fridays, 12:00 to 02:00 on Saturdays and from 12:00 to 01:00 on Sundays (although rides/stands can open from 11:00 everyday).
