From Friday 19 to Sunday 21 September 2025, Luxembourg’s national pickleball team competed in the second European Pickleball Championship at the Foro Italico in Rome, Italy.
The championship brought together teams from 30 countries, with Luxembourg represented by twelve athletes. The 50+ category included Andrea Wischermann, Michèle Schweitzer, Sandy Probst, Andreas Wischermann, François-Xavier Fontaine and Pascal Gilles. In the 19+ category, Anne Schumacher, Karolina Maniewski, Nicole Sibenaler, Gregory Schurmans, Pascal Pasciolla and Thomas Mert competed.
According to the Fédération Luxembourgeoise de Tennis (FLT), the Grand Duchy’s team achieved fifteen wins - about one match out of three - against some of the best European teams. Michèle Schweitzer even reached the semi-final in the senior women’s singles, the best result of the team.
In the group stage she defeated opponents from Latvia and Estonia, lost to competitors from Sweden and England, and advanced to the play-offs in second place. On her way to the top four, Schweitzer overcame players from Lithuania and Ireland, before being stopped by the eventual category winner from Italy. In the bronze medal match she was defeated by a player from the Netherlands.
The top three of the European Championship were Spain, England and Italy, with England giving up the first place it had won last year in Southampton.
“We are extremely satisfied with this performance,” said Benoit Quisquater, FLT President of the Pickleball Commission. “Our players showed an excellent level of play, strong cohesion and steady progress. These results encourage us to continue our efforts to promote and develop pickleball in Luxembourg.”
Pickleball, which arrived in the Grand Duchy only three years ago, is experiencing rapid growth, with nearly 300 players and more than six practice venues across the country, soon to be nine, FLT noted. Accessible to all generations, the sport is played on a court four times smaller than a tennis court, with its own specific rackets and balls.
