On Tuesday 22 October 2024, Luxembourg's Ministry of Research and Higher Education published key figures regarding state financial aid for higher education for the academic year 2023-2024.
A total of 33,349 students received financial assistance from the state in the winter semester and 30,605 in the summer semester 2023/2024. €172.5 million in aid was granted in the form of grants, €124 million to residents and €48.5 million to non-residents. €121.3 million in the form of loans was granted, €104.4 million to residents and €16.9 million to non-residents.
3,364 students were denied financial assistance in the winter semester and 1,942 students were denied financial assistance in the summer semester.
The amounts granted in previous years were as follows:
- 2019/20: €128.6 million in grants, €216.9 million in loans
- 2020/21: €142.6 million in grants, €104.1 million in loans
- 2021/22: €142.7 million in grants, €118.8 million in loans
- 2022/23: €159.5 million in grants, €216.9 million in loans
Germany remained the favourite country of study for resident students (4,468 students), followed by Luxembourg (3,975 students) and Belgium (3,166 students).
In terms of higher education in Luxembourg, 793 students were enrolled in 38 BTS level courses (superior technician certificate) offered in 2023-2024 and 325 BTS diplomas were issued in 2024. The University of Luxembourg had 6,376 students of 132 different nationalities enrolled.
