According to a recent report by Chef’s Pencil, an international food magazine covering industry trends, Luxembourg has the second-highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants per capita worldwide.

The Michelin Guide has been a powerful marketing tool for promoting cities, regions, and countries as top fine-dining destinations. According to Chef’s Pencil, Michelin stars enhance a location's tourism appeal and culinary reputation, as seen with Denmark and the Basque Country; the global culinary tourism market valued at $11.5 billion and growing.

The Michelin Guide is expanding, now covering over 40 countries and territories with new restaurants.

Luxembourg is home to the second-highest concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. Luxembourg has outranked Switzerland for the past few years, but while both countries saw a steady number of Michelin restaurants and experienced fast population growth - Switzerland to a record 8,960,800 at the end of 2023 and Luxembourg to a record high of 672,050 at the beginning of 2024 - Luxembourg's population grew a little bit faster, thereby just missing first place.

The top five ranking was as follows:

  1. Switzerland (Michelin restaurants per capita: 66,872);
  2. Luxembourg (Michelin restaurants per capita: 67,250);
  3. Belgium (Michelin restaurants per capita: 81,797);
  4. Malta (Michelin restaurants per capita: 90,333);
  5. Hong Kong SAR (Michelin restaurants per capita: 94,823).
