The first edition of the European Week of Sport was officially launched this morning in Brussels, in the presence of Luxembourg Minister of Sports, Romain Schneider, European Commissioner responsible for sport, Tibor Nacvracsics, and MEP Santiago Fisas.
Nacvracsics and Fisas were at the forefront of this sporting initiative, which is being filtered through 31 European countries in the form of around 2000 events.
European Sports Week was developed as a means of raising awareness and informing Europe's citizens on the lack of physical activity, with the aim of encouraging them to participate in sports. With 42% of European adults said to never take part in sport or practice a physical activity, the project will be an important factor in reducing this figure.
Luxembourg's Sports Week will be held from 12 to 20 September and will therefore, in part at least, avoid the school holidays. The official European week of sport in Luxembourg will include four main events, these being:
12-13 September 2015: Salon Top Sport fair on sport, attended by the Luxembourgish Olympic and Sporting Committee and 32 sports federations
13 September 2015: Tunnellaf - 4 foot races in the 'Grouft' tunnel.
15 September 2015: Conference on the importance on motor skills in early childhod by Dr. Renate Zimmer
17 September 2015: Conference on 'How to Use Social Media to Promote Sport' by Alessandro Noto.
