The Institut Pierre Werner (IPW) and the Luxembourg City Film Festival (LuxFilmFest) have teamed up to organise a screening of Dominik Graf's 2021 drama film "Fabian: Going to the Dogs" (Fabian oder Der Gang vor die Hunde), in German with English subtitles, at Ciné Utopia in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg on Sunday 6 March 2022 at 14:30.

Based on Erich Kästner's 1931 novel "Fabian: The Story of a Moralist" (Fabian. Die Geschichte eines Moralisten), the film adaptation celebrated its worldwide premiere at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival in the Berlinale Competition section, in March 2021.

Synopsis

Berlin, 1931. Between sublets and the underworld, where brothels are artists’ studios, Nazis are yelling abuse in the streets and Babelsberg is dreaming of producing “psychological cinema”. Life is surging, society is fermenting and corroding. As long as he still has a job, Jakob Fabian (Tom Schilling), who has a doctorate in German studies, writes advertising copy during the day and frequents the city’s more outlandish establishments with Stephan Labude (Albrecht Schuch) at night. While his friend, who later confesses to having failed “in the subjects of life and profession”, is a go-getter when it comes to communism and sex, Fabian remains sober and distant. Without really believing in it, he is waiting for the “victory of decency”. His love for Cornelia Battenberg (Saskia Rosendahl) is the only thing that makes him question his ironic fatalism. She becomes a ray of hope in his crumbling existence.

Dominik Graf was born in Munich, Germany in 1952. He studied at the University of Television and Film Munich from 1974 to 1980. During his career as a director and writer, he has won several prizes including the German Film Award, the Bavarian Film and TV Award, the German Television Award and, several times, the Grimme Award. His works include the films "The Cat" (Die Katze; 1988), "The Invincibles" (1994) and “Beloved Sisters" (Die geliebten Schwestern; 2014), the TV series “Der Fahnder” and "In the Face of Crime" (Im Angesicht des Verbrechens), as well as several episodes of “Police Call 110" (Polizeiruf 110) and "Tatort".

The screening of "Fabian: Going to the Dogs" will take place as a CovidCheck event.
