In its latest household budget survey, STATEC has found that Luxembourg households allocate 12% of their food expenditure to organic products.

Since 2011, the share of private food expenditure devoted to organic products has varied between 10% and 14% depending on the year. This year's results thus fit within this range.

According to the survey, the organic products preferred by consumers were baby food (38%), honey (22%), eggs (20%), flour and cereals (15%), milk (12%) and fruit and vegetables (10%). 81% of organic food products were purchased in supermarkets, 9% in discount stores and 8% in grocery stores. This distribution differed slightly from that of non-organic products where 70% were purchased in supermarkets and 21% in discount stores.

Average monthly consumption expenditure amounted to €4,190 for all households in 2017 compared to €3,821 in 2012. Expenditure increased by around 10% over this period: up 15% for households with children; up 16 % for households without children; up 6% for single-parent households. In real terms, without taking inflation into account, consumer spending by single-parent households has almost stagnated since 2007.

In addition, one-person households and couples without children aged under 65 spent more money on restaurants and hotels (9% and 10% respectively) than households with children (7%) or single-parent households (6%).

The share of the budget spent on food decreased with increasing income. In 2017, the wealthiest households spent 50% more in absolute terms than poorer households, but in terms of the weight of their budget, this was only 7% compared to 11%.
