On Saturday 28 October 2017, the new expat shop in Strassen, Home from Home, had its official opening.
Following on from its "soft" opening the week before - during which the two entrepreneurs behind the new retail initiative, John Heffernan and Mark Hollis, were astonished with the demand and subsequently had two additional trips to the UK to replenish supplies - the official opening was a more formal affair.
The Ambassador of Ireland to Luxembourg, Peadar Carpenter, and Helen Patton (grand-daughter of General Patton) of the Patton Foundation, cut the ribbon during the opening ceremony; the store had also laid on entertainment courtesy of Alizeti who provided the live musical entertainment, and a BBQ with sausages/hot dogs, bacon rolls and drinks.
Home from Home caters for expatriates' tastes - whether they be British, Irish, South African, American, etc., with the store stocking a wide range of produce from bacon, sausages and gammon steaks to biscuits, jams to teas, biscuits to chocolate, with a corner for cards and books. The crumpets have been in particular demand this week-end too... Apart from fresh produce and non-perishables, the freezers are now stocked too, including with frozen fish, etc.
Talking with Chronicle.lu on Sunday, Mark Hollis revealed that many Luxembourg nationals have been enjoying the shop too, having missed Little Britain which closed last year.
Home from Home is located at 148 Route d'Arlon in Strassen (opposite the Swagat Indian restaurant). Opening times are Weekdays 08:30 - 18:30; Saturdays 09:00 - 18:00; Sundays 09:00 - 13:00. See www.homefromhome.lu, tel: 2631-3971.
