The statistical and market watch department of the Luxembourg Institute for Regulation (ILR) has published a statistical report on the postal services market in Luxembourg for 2020.

The statistical report presents the key figures concerning courier services, parcel services and the postal service on the basis of various indicators, such as turnover, volume, jobs and quality of the services provided. The report is based on data provided by 27 service providers active in the Luxembourg postal services market.

The turnover of the postal services market reached €183.79 million in 2020, an increase of 2.0% compared to 2019. On the one hand, the turnover of postal services amounted to €113.18 million, i.e. an annual decrease of 2.8%.

On the other hand, a double-digit increase of 10.7% characterises the evolution of the turnover of parcel services, totaling €70.61 million. The share of revenue from parcel services is steadily increasing, rising from 35.4% of total postal sector turnover in 2019 to 38.4% in 2020.

The volume of postal mail services amounted to 155.54 million units, down 6.8% compared to 2019. Parcel services totalled 13.49 million units, an increase of 25.5% compared to 2019. The growth of the parcel services market has been supported for years by the inbound cross-border services market, which recorded a clear increase in both volume processed and turnover.

The postal sector currently employs more than 1,900 people. The designated universal postal service provider, POST Luxembourg, employs more than 1,300 people, or 68% of jobs in the sector (down 2% compared to 2019).

Regarding access to postal services, the number of automatic distribution points (pack up) reached 117 in 2020 (up 14% from the year before).
