Luxembourg's railways, the CFL, have announced that they installed a civil engineering structure below the A3 motorway over the weekend as part of the construction of the new Luxembourg - Bettembourg railway line.

From 21 to 24 May 2021, the CFL laid four welded beams weighing a total of 248 tonnes on the pillars of the brand new "Ouvrage d'art 13" (OA 13) structure. The works form part of the Luxembourg - Bettembourg railway project, which began in 2016. The aim of this project is to increase capacity for a very busy section of the Luxembourg rail network.

To lift and position these steel elements, the use of two mobile cranes, with a lifting capacity of 400 and 300 tonnes respectively, was required. Whilst the A3 was closed to traffic, the CFL also dismantled the protective decking (a platform to protect against falling materials) of the Passage à Faune.

The OA 13 is one of eight engineering and hydraulic structures built as part of the project for the new two-track railway line between Luxembourg and Bettembourg. The OA 13 structure, a two-span 72-metre-long deck bridge, will cross the A3 in order to connect the town of Hesperange from the east to the west at "Fennerholz". The use of the OA 13 is intended for soft mobility to connect the PC1 cycle path from the east to the west of the A3.

The construction of the OA 13 began in May 2020 and its completion is scheduled for April 2022.
