CFL's Funicular Railway;
Since its inauguration on 10 December 2017, the funicular has become an essential means of transport and welcomed its millionth passenger in August.
The funicular attracts 5,000 - 6,000 passengers daily on average. The funicular is the key element of the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg intermodal interchange hub, connecting the Luxembourg rail network, the tram, buses and active mobility between them. The exchange hub is located near the Pont Rouge, the new funicular allows travellers to move easily between the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg railway stop at the bottom of the Red Bridge and the exchange hub platform located on the Kirchberg plateau.
From here, passengers can continue their journey to the districts of Kirchberg, Limpertsberg or to the Upper Town. For example, the new railway stop and the funicular allow a person from Ettelbruck who works in Kirchberg to gain 22 minutes on a trip. And music lovers, wishing to go to the Philharmonie to admire new classical masterpieces, regularly benefit from the CFL train-funicular service. The Dräi Eechelen Museum and the Grand Théâtre de la Ville de Luxembourg are other cultural points of interest easily accessible thanks to the new infrastructures.
The funicular route is one of the shortest in the world with a length of just 200 metres and a difference of almost 40 metres between the railway stop and the Kirchberg plateau. The time of a single journey is one minute. The funicular opening hours are adapted to those of train traffic. With a set of four cabins, spread over two independent systems, the funicular is 11.8 metres long and 3.5 metres wide and each cabin weighs about 17 tons. Each equipped with 16 folding seats, they can accommodate a maximum of 168 passengers per cabin. The cabins have been designed to accommodate people with reduced mobility and passengers wishing to board a pram or a bike. The funicular is freely accessible to all users of public transport and active mobility.
