On Wednesday 26 February 2025, the official inauguration of the second phase of the new building of the Lycée Privé Emile Metz (LPEM private secondary school) in Differdange took place.

Luxembourg’s Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, the Mayor of the City of Differdange, Guy Altmeisch, members of the college of aldermen, as well as the board of directors, management and the secondary school community, attended the inauguration.

A joint statement issued by the Ministry of Education, the City of Differdange and LPEM reported that the LPEM, based in Luxembourg-Dommeldange since 1914, opened a second site at Villa Hadir in Differdange at the start of the 2023/2024 school year, in a temporary modular building. The secondary school is described as being the only one in Luxembourg to be certified as a "MINT-freundliche Schule" (a mathematics, computer science, natural sciences and technology friendly school). The LPEM is also reported to maintain strong relationships with industry, offering students opportunities for practical training and apprenticeships in a professional environment.

The statement added that the Differdange site currently has 91 students enrolled. 481 students are enrolled at the LPEM in Dommeldange. The LPEM therefore has a total of 572 students, as well as 112 teachers.

After launching English-speaking classes in vocational training education, the LPEM announced the opening of 7th General (7G) classes with German as the medium language, as well as 7th General-FR (7G-FR) classes which will have French as the medium language, from September 2025. In total, four classes of 20 students each will be accommodated.

The statement added that the new modular and temporary LPEM building in Differdange is a modern and functional infrastructure, designed to offer an optimal learning environment for students. Composed of 89 modules, it extends over a surface area of 4,600 m² spread over four floors and can accommodate a total of 250 students.

According to the statement, agreement on the land was concluded in December 2023, marking a key milestone in the realisation of the project. Construction began in May 2024, followed by the installation of the first modules in June 2024, with half of the building operational by September 2024. The building includes various infrastructures adapted to the needs of students and teachers. A school restaurant, capable of accommodating 250 people in two sittings, will open after Easter 2025. A reception area with an auditorium, a fitness room, a "MakerSpace" and a media library are already available for students.

The building has five traditional classrooms, five modern workshops, six equipped laboratories, as well as two rooms dedicated to projects. A special medical room is also available.

The statement indicated that as part of the development of the new LPEM building, outdoor facilities will be created in the near future to offer students an environment conducive to their well-being. These spaces will be designed to be used during breaks, thus promoting relaxation, discussions and outdoor activities. An outdoor multifunctional sports field will also be integrated, allowing students to practise different sport disciplines and to exert themselves in a suitable setting.

In the medium term, the construction of a new permanent building that can accommodate 1,200 students is planned.

The statement noted that, as a small secondary school, the LPEM guarantees "more individualised monitoring and optimal supervision, thus promoting academic success". Its model is based on a school on a human scale, where proximity to teachers plays a key role: teachers remain available on-site outside of class hours, offering additional support to students and facilitating exchanges with parents when required.

In addition, the secondary school’s strategic location reportedly ensures direct access to the bus network and Differdange train station ensures easy accessibility for students coming from different regions. The school also facilitates organised transport to the Oberkorn sports hall (John Scheuren sports centre) for physical education classes.

The statement added that in the longer term, the LPEM aims to offer classes in higher general secondary education in Natural Sciences (4GSN).
