Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth has presented the results of the 2023 summer session of secondary school leaving exams.
These results include those of public secondary schools and private secondary schools following the national curriculum, as well as those of students following evening classes and eBac courses and those at Schengen-Lyzeum across the border in Perl (Germany).
A total of 3,740 students (2,127 female and 1,613 male candidates) sat their secondary school leaving exams this year. The overall pass rate was 74% in 2023, down slightly from 75% in 2022; the failure rate was 11% (up from 9%).
The posponement rate was 15% (down from 16% in 2022), with 559 students set to sit one or more postponed exams during the autumn session.
In "classical" secondary schools, the pass rate stood at 81% (83% in 2022). The postponement rate was 12% (11%), whilst the failure rate was 7% (6%).
In "general" secondary schools, the pass rate was 69% (68% in 2022). The postponement rate stood at 18% (20%), whilst the failure rate was 14% (12%).
Young women obtained a higher pass rate (88%) on average than young men (81%) in classical secondary education. In general secondary education, the pass rates were equal (69%) for both young women and young men.
The number of students who obtained an "excellent" grade (average equal to or greater than 52 out of 60 points) rose to 155 in 2023 (i.e. 6% of those who passed, (compared to 4% in 2022). 129 students in classical secondary education and 26 students in general secondary education obtained this distinction.
