On Tuesday 16 March 2021, Luxembourg's Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Claude Meisch, presented the country's fifth accredited public European school, which will open its doors in Mersch at the start of the 2021/2022 school year.
The Anne Beffort European School (École internationale Mersch Anne Beffort - EIMAB) will welcome its first students in the first year of secondary school in September 2021. The secondary school offers three language sections: English, French and German. Students will graduate with a European Baccalaureate. The school will offer primary education, a "maison relais" (daycare centre) and a boarding school in 2022 - making it the first international school in Luxembourg to offer a boarding option.
There are now five accredited European schools forming part of Luxembourg's public school system; the other four schools are located in Differdange / Esch-sur-Alzette, Mondorf-les-Bains, Junglinster and Clervaux. The new public European school is located in Mersch in the renovated and extended annex of the Lycée Classique de Diekirch. The decision to open a fifth school in central Luxembourg came in response to ever-increasing demand.
The school is named after Anne Beffort, who became the first Luxembourgish woman to obtain a PhD from the Sorbonne in Paris in 1909.
A sixth public European school is planned to open in Luxembourg City at the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
