The Board of Governors of the European Schools announced earlier this week that there would be no final year exams this year due to the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic; this decision applies to all accredited European Schools, including the two in Luxembourg.
According to a letter sent out to school directors on Monday, the Board of Governors approved several measures at its meeting on 15-17 April 2020 to address the risks linked to COVID-19. Among the decisions taken was the decision to allow all primary school pupils to progress to the next school year (unless their legal guardian and the school decide otherwise) and to suspend second semester B exams for Year 4 and 5 students, with first semester marks being used to determine their final marks. The Board similarly agreed to suspend second semester exams for Year 6 students, with the first semester results being doubled to get the final mark.
Moreover, the Board of Governors agreed to cancel all European Baccalaureate written and oral exams this year, with the final mark being awarded based on A and B marks. Nevertheless, students may request to sit these exams in autumn or to repeat the entire Year 7 (final year).
This decision contrasts with that of Luxembourg's Ministry of Education which recently announced that all final exams would take place as scheduled in public secondary schools.
