On Tuesday 13 October, St George’s International School welcomed, for the fourth time, the inspiring Dr Guy Sutton – Director of the independent consultancy Medical Biology Interactive (MBI) and Honorary Lecturer at the University of Nottingham Medical School.
Dr Guy Sutton contributes to teaching medical students at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He has been a visiting researcher to universities in the United States and has conducted research projects and data analysis for various organisations, including the Department of Health and the Medical Research Council. He has presented research findings at international conferences and talked about the theoretical and clinical aspects of his research on television and radio.
During Dr Sutton’s presentation the audience was introduced to new state-of-the-art technologies and research of the human brain such as mapping the human genome, neurogenetics, epigenetics, neural decoding, optogenetics, brain scanning technologies, neurobionics and many others. Dr Sutton also covered Obama’s 3 billion dollar brain initiative, an attempt to raise funds for bold new research efforts to revolutionise our understanding of the human mind in order to discover new ways to treat, prevent, and cure brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s, schizophrenia, autism, epilepsy and traumatic brain injury. Interesting myths were debunked during the presentation such as the belief that we only use 10% of our brain, which is, according to Dr Sutton ‘completely untrue’.
The entrance to this event was free, however contributions were gratefully accepted and were donated to the Make-a-Wish Foundation in Luxembourg.
St George’s International School Luxembourg is located in Luxembourg-Hamm and caters to approximately 700 students, with 230 in the Secondary school.
