Not put off by a bit of rain, today’s Stop Brexit march went ahead as schedule with anti-Brexit protesters walking from Kirchberg to the Place d’Armes in Luxembourg-ville.
Organised by EUnite, a group "fighting for our rights in the EU to be kept as they are now", the event followed yesterday’s march in Brussels and a small but animated crowd of protesters, mainly of British nationality, came together to protest Brexit, holding EU-themed flags, placards and banners.
Arriving in Place d’Armes from Kirchberg, rather than the originally planned Place Guillaume II, the leaders of EUnite took the stage, filling the central square with European-themed music and words of both hope and frustration regarding the current Brexit situation.
First up was the Boris Jonson impersonator “Faux BoJo”, or Drew Galdron, who has been performing across the UK and mainland Europe, who kicked off the rally with a touch of humour- and his very own Brexit song, in both French and English, sung to the tune of The Jungle Book’s “I wanna be like you”.
Following speeches by organisers Samit Shah and Sue Finch, the Luxembourgish MEP and Democratic Party member Charles Goerens took the stage to address the rally. As a vocal advocate of human rights, Goerens commented that whilst he fully respects the outcome of last year’s referendum and believes in a positive outcome, he regrets that both the UK and the EU have not been more supportive of the idea of associative membership, to which he remains committed.
Charles Goerens, who was also formerly Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister, added that he “will continue campaigning for EU and UK citizens’ rights” throughout his mandate. Moreover, he remarked on the importance of “citizen engagement and active participation” such as the Stop Brexit March, before leaving the crowd with his thoughts that, perhaps ironically, “the most committed Europeans are for the time being living on the British Isles”.
