Luxembourg’s Minister for Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, received on Monday 15 July 2024 the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for the Middle East Peace Process, Sven Koopmans, and on Tuesday 16 July 2024 the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan, Ayman Safadi, for working meetings in Luxembourg.

These working meetings aimed to strengthen dialogue between partners striving to find a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade noted.

The EUSR for the Middle East Peace Process has the mandate to make an active contribution to the definitive settlement of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict based on a two-state solution. Jordan, as a neighbouring country, plays a key mediation role and is an indispensable partner in the Middle East peace process, the ministry stressed.

Minister Bettel took the opportunity to thank his Jordanian counterpart for Jordan's tireless efforts to promote regional stability and peace, as well as for the solidarity that the country has shown over the years by hosting hundreds of thousands of refugees.

Regarding the situation in Gaza, Minister Bettel stressed that an immediate ceasefire must be the top priority, in order to end the suffering of the civilian population and allow the release of Israeli hostages.

The Minister also stressed the importance for the international community to maintain regular exchanges in order to find a political solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

"Only a genuine political solution based on the two-state solution - that is, with Israel and Palestine as two independent states, side by side - is likely to create a just and lasting peace in the region. I am convinced: Peace for Palestine will be peace for Israel, and vice versa," noted the head of Luxembourg diplomacy in this context.

Minister Bettel added he will continue his discussions with international and regional partners with the dual objective of improving the situation of the populations on the ground and achieving a lasting political settlement of the conflict.
