Luxembourg Foreign Minister, Jean Asselborn, was in Montenegro yesterday to meet with his counterpart, Srdjan Darmanović, the President Filip Vujanovic, Prime Minister Filip Duško Marković, and Parliamentary President, Ivan Brajovic.
Minister Asselborn welcomed the fact that "with 26 out of 35 chapters out of 35, Montenegro is currently the most advanced country in its negotiations with the EU, A positive example for the entire region ", while calling on the Montenegrin government to continue" to take the necessary decisions to ensure that the review of the rule of law system leads to concrete results.”
Recognizing that Montenegro has made the fight against corruption and organised crime a priority, the minister stressed that all these efforts will bring tangible and immediate benefits to the Montenegrin population.
Discussions then turned to the regional situation and Montenegro's relations with its neighbours. In this context, Minister Asselborn particularly welcomed Podgorica's efforts to stabilise the Western Balkans, particularly through regional cooperation initiatives and the negotiation of bilateral agreements aimed at creating a favourable legal framework for economic and Business. In addition, Montenegro's upcoming accession to NATO will further strengthen security and stability in this part of the Balkans for the benefit of the entire region.
The interviews also examined the migration situation, with Luxembourg being one of the EU countries most affected by unfounded asylum applications from Montenegro a few years ago. In this context, Minister Asselborn, recalling that the Grand Duchy counts Montenegro among countries of safe origin, welcomed the efforts of the Montenegrin authorities to resolve the problem so that the number of applicants has accordingly significantly decreased.
