On Tuesday 21 June 2016, the Deputy Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Étienne Schneider, visited Berlin as Minister of Defence to meet with his German counterpart, Ursula von der Leyen, for a working meeting.
After military honours, the two ministers discussed the preparation works for the NATO summit to be held on 8 and 9 July 2016 in Warsaw.
At the meeting, Luxembourg and Germany expressed satisfaction with the preparations for the summit, which aims to strengthen the stance of deterrence and collective defense of the Atlantic alliance, whilst emphasising a message of openness to dialogue.
At a meeting of NATO Defence Ministers held in Brussels last week, Étienne Schneider stressed that Warsaw must not come across as a meeting against Russia, instead calling for the prioritisation of dialogue and transparency to avoid possible misunderstandings and incidents.
Ursula von der Leyen and Étienne Schneider also held an exchange of views on the importance and progress of issues on the agenda regarding bilateral military cooperation, including related industrial aspects.
