Luxembourg Prime Minister, Minister of State Xavier Bettel and Minister of Cooperation and Humanitarian Action, Romain Schneider, will be travelling to Istanbul to participate in the first World Humanitarian Summit taking place on 23 and 24 May 2016.
At the summit, Head of State and Government will reaffirm their shared commitment to humanity and universal humanitarian principles. The objective of the summit is to generate global leadership to prevent and end conflicts and help alleviate human suffering caused by armed conflict, natural disasters and epidemics through concrete commitments.
An expected outcome of the summit will be an agreement signed between donors and humanitarian actors, known as the "Grand Bargain", which will deal with better efficiency in humanitarian funding.
Xavier Bettel is due to participate in a high-level round table entitled "Humanitarian Financing - Investing in Humanity" chaired by United Nations Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, as well as a special session on Islamic social finance.
Meanwhile Minister Schneider will join a high-level round table focused on "Changing the Lives of Populations from the Provision of Assistance to the Removal of Need" which will particularly address the link between humanitarian assistance and long-term development. The Minister will also attend the launch events of a global alliance on humanitarian innovation and a new charter for the inclusion of disable people in humanitarian action.
