The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Filippo Grandi, met with Luxembourg Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, on Monday 18 April 2016 under the auspices of the former's visit to the Grand Duchy.
Discussions between Minister Asselborn and High Commissioner Grandi addressed in depth the international refugee crisis and the EU's response in the field, focusing particularly on the implementation of the agreement between the EU and Turkey. In this context, the Minister emphasised that "the role of the UNHCR in resettlement from Turkey is essential", adding that "the UNHCR needs to be able to work in complete independence and have access to all camps including that of Dikili".
The meeting followed Minister Asselborn's recent trip to Switzerland, where he visited the centre in Zurich where new accelerated procedures for asylum applications are being tested.
