Étienne Schneider and Jean Asselborn are in Brussels today to participate in the Justice and Home Affairs (JHA) Council of the European Union.
Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Internal Security, Étienne Schneider, will attend the session dedicated to Internal Security. This meeting will primarily focus on the reform of the EU Directive regarding the control of the acquisition and possession of firearms and on the implementation of anti-terrorism measures decided by Heads of State and Government and by JHA Ministers in 2015.
Meanwhile, as Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Minister for Immigration and Asylum, Jean Asselborn will also form part of the Council to discuss the state of the migration crisis, including the situation in Greece and along the Western Balkans route. Cooperation Turkey and possible future measures will also be discussed in this regard.
The Council will additionally review the progress made on the proposal for a European Border and Coast Guard Agency, which would replace Frontex and would be made up of national authorities responsible for border management and their border and coast guards. The objective of the project has been cited as the guarantee and implementation of integrated European external border management.
