Monday 7 March 2016 marked the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and the Russian Federation, for which Minister of Foreign and European Affairs, Jean Asselborn, sent a congratulatory message to his Russian counterpart, Sergei Lavrov.

In his message, Minister Asselborn commented on a series of key events in the history of the two countries' bilateral relations, stating that "for Luxembourg Russia remains a friendly country with which we wish to cooperate to contribute to the peace and stability of this continent that we share". The Minister further expressed his conviction that faced with the challenges of the 21st century "our 125 year old bilateral relations provide a solid basis of trust to maintain a hopeful look towards the future".

The 125th anniversary will be further commemorated later this year with a meeting between the two ministers.
