The Minister of Foreign and European Affairs of Luxembourg, Jean Asselborn, today received the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General for the Sahel, Hiroute Guebre Sellassie, for a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Luxembourg.
In the meeting, Minister Asselborn and the Special Representative provided an update on the political, security and economic development in the region, before addressing the relationship between the EU countries and the Sahel.
The meeting was also an opportunity to address the efforts of coordination and partnership between the countries of the Sahel and the European Union, as well as regional challenges, including poverty, migration and the fight against terrorism. These last two topics were also subject to dicussion by Minister Asselborn and Minister Étienne Schneider, respectively, at the informal meeting of Ministers which took place over 9 and 10 July 2015.
