The 54th International Bazaar is being held on Saturday 29 (11:00 - 19:00) and Sunday 30 (10:00 - 18:00) November 2014 - Discover the world´s cultures in just one weekend...
Where? As in previous years, the International Bazaar will be opening its doors to all their friends for the traditional Bazaar weekend event at LUXEXPO. There you will encounter a certain cosmopolitan flair and, above all, an exuberant joie de vivre. Return home with the satisfying feeling that your attendance and all your purchases have contributed towards alleviating poverty here in Europe and in the developing countries.
This year the Bazaar will be officially opened on Saturday afternoon by HRH the Grande-Duc Héritier Guillaume and by HRH Duchesse Héritière Stéphanie and Marie-Hélène Ehrke-Harf, the President of the International Bazaar, will show them around the halls.
The International Bazaar, as a charitable event, is one of the major fund-raisers in the Luxembourg calendar. There you may wander among more than 70 stands representing about 60 nations - staffed by great teams of volunteers - all offering the very best of their national wares. You will be swept along in the convivial atmosphere –charming folksongs, strumming guitars, original national handicrafts, exclusively imported goods and aromas from every continent. Find a thousand ideas for gifts ranging from fashion accessories to fine art, books, home interiors items, festive decorations from around the world , enjoy the local music, the singing and the dancing and, last but not least, a wide variety of delicious dishes and gourmet specialties to eat or take away. And why not buy tickets for 20 exciting tombolas and win some super prizes?
Last year, the Bazaar itself, as well as other activities organised by the stands, raised well over €500,000 which was allocated to numerous charity projects. This year, proceeds from the Bazaar will be donated to 90 different charities nominated by the various stands. Most of the beneficiaries are organisations in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but European and Luxembourgish charities will benefit too.
The International Bazaar’s aim is to fight against poverty throughout the world. Priority is given to women, children and families. The support is wide ranging: schooling, professional training, social re-integration, medical care and training of local medical staff, etc.
3 charities from the list of 90 were identified as deserving of more financial aid.
The Principal Charity for 2014 is a project in Benin run by the Religious Congregation « Petites Servantes des Pauvres». The Sisters run a Welcome and Family Re-Integration Centre (CARF) where they take care of the orphans and vulnerable children as well as the elderly and vulnerable women. CARF offers nutritional counselling, medical care, monitoring and socio-professional training. Their aim is to promote self-sufficiency by means of gardening, animal husbandry and the production of soap as part of their activities. The Bazaar will finance in part the costs of the socio-economic improvement and in part the annual costs of its medical services.
Another of the Charities that will receive significant financial aid is «Un nouveau Sourire pour Notre École» in Peru. It is sponsored by the Association « Luxembourg-Pérou ASBL et ONG». The project is the urgent renovation of a comprehensive training centre for 91 mentally handicapped children and a nursery/primary school hosting 127 young children in an area where studying and living conditions are extremely precarious.
The Charity « La Maison des Enfants d’Awa» in Senegal is an Association composed entirely of volunteers, working to provide food for children and their families and Health care in their infirmary. The Bazaar will finance the installation of solar panels to improve the living conditions of the families.
Support will also be given to 4 charities based in Luxembourg: Make-a-Wish Luxembourg; ALAN asbl Bascharage; A.S.T.I. Luxembourg and ALUPSE-Bébé.
Several of the other charities sponsored by Luxembourg organisations operate in developing countries. They include Frères des Hommes in Burkina Faso; Terres des Hommes in Ecuador, CARE asbl in Laos, ECPAT Luxembourg in Nepal
Entrance to the Bazaar and parking at LUXEXPO are both free, although parking space is very limited. Public transport is highly recommended, e.g. Bus Route 1 runs from P&R Bouillon every 10 minutes directly to Parking Foire (main entrance of LUXEXPO) with several stops in the City.
Please make use of the service of a Crèche (situated near the Entrance) for children from 2-8 years.
