The 56th International Bazaar is taking place this coming week-end at LuxExpo in Luxembourg-Kirchberg where visitors can discover the world's cultures from 5 continents in just one
The Bazaar will be officially opened on Saturday at 11:30 by HRH the Grand Duchess and HRH the Hereditary Grand Duchess, with Erika Ehrhard, President of the Bazar International, showing them around the halls.
The Bazar International, a charitable event, is one of the major fund-raisers in the Luxembourg calendar. There you may wander among some 73 stands representing 61 nations - staffed by great teams of volunteers - all offering the very best of their national wares. You will be swept along in the convivial atmosphere – charming folksongs, strumming guitars, original national handicrafts, exclusively imported goods and aromas from every continent. Find a multitude of ideas for gifts ranging from fashion accessories to fine art, books, home interior items, festive decorations from around the world , enjoy the local music, the singing and dancing and, last but not least, a wide variety of delicious dishes and gourmet specialties to eat or take away. And why not buy tickets for 19 exciting tombolas and win some super prizes?
Cotton bags with the Bazaar logo will be on sale at €2 apiece so that you may carry your purchases home safely.
Last year, the Bazaar itself, as well as other activities organised by the stands, raised €600,000 which was allocated to numerous charity projects. In addition, in 2016 the Bazaar donated in total €15,000 to SOS Village d’Enfants Monde and Handicap International to support the victims of the hurricane Matthew in Haiti.
This year, proceeds from the Bazaar will be donated to 86 different charities nominated by the various stands. Most of the beneficiaries are organisations in Asia, Africa and Latin America, but European and Luxembourgish charities will benefit too. The Bazaar’s aim is to fight against poverty throughout the world. Priority is given to women, children and families. The support is wide-ranging: schooling, professional training, social re-integration, medical care and training of local medical staff, etc.
The principal charity for 2016 is Blue Dragon Children’s Foundation, Hanoi (www.bluedragon.org), run by a charitable organisation in Vietnam. Its aim is to help street children, disabled children and children who are victims of human trafficking in Vietnam and the surrounding border areas. Luxembourg's International Bazaar de finance the cost of schooling, professional training, medical care, etc., for some 90 children rescued from the streets, human trafficking or slavery.
Support will also be given to three charities based in Luxembourg:
- Trauerwee asbl, Tétange;
- Fondation Kriibskank Kanner, Strassen;
- Fondation Autisme Luxembourg, Capellen.
20 other projects in developing countries run by Luxembourg organisations will also receive funds from the Bazaar. They include SOS Faim Luxembourg asbl in Benin; Le Soleil dans la Main asbl, Winseler, in Burkina Faso; Handicap International, Luxembourg, in Cambodia; CSI Lëtzebuerg in Congo (DRC); Espoir pour les Enfants d’Haïti asbl, Pétange, in Haiti; Terres des Hommes asbl, Hespérange, in Nicaragua; and Zangdok Palri asbl, Howald, in Tibet.
Opening Times: Saturday 26 November from 11:00 to 19:00, and Sunday 27 November from 10:00 to 18:00.
Entrance to the Bazaar and parking at LUXEXPO are both free, although parking space is very limited. Public transport is highly recommended! Free-of-charge bus service on both days!
Bus No 18 will stop near the North Entrance of LuxExpo.
