On 7 and 8 November 2016, Luxembourg Deputy-Prime Minister and Minister for the Economy, Étienne Schneider attended the Web Summit 2016 in Lisbon, the biggest conference in the world on the theme of digital innovation.
At the inauguration of the Web Summit 2016 and the Lisbon Global Forum, Étienne Schneider has a meeting with the CEOs of several multinational companies and high governmental representatives, including the Portuguese Prime Minister, António Costa, Minister for the Economy, Manuel Caldeira Cabral, and Secretary of State for Industry, João Vasconcelos. The aim of these meetings was to discuss subjects related to technological progress, innovation and entrepreneurship.
As part of the Web Summit’s conference, Étienne Schneider also had meetings with the business managers of companies such as Vodafone, Huawei, Kaspersky Lab and PPRO, some of whom are already present in Luxembourg, in order to discuss the digitalisation of the Luxembourgish economy and the development of potential projects in the Grand-Duchy.
During these meetings, the Deputy-Prime Minister stated: “The government’s efforts to further diversify the fabric of Luxembourg’s economy through innovation are greatly appreciated, and especially the progress made in specific sectors like Big Data, High Performance Computing and Cybersecurity for which Luxembourg is already recognised internationally.”
The Web Summit is mainly dedicated to start-ups and brought together over 52,000 participants, 15,000 businesses, investors and key political figures.
