Today, 2 November 2016, marks this year’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
Whilst no journalists from Luxembourg have been killed whilst doing their job, it is important to remember the UN’s International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists.
Last year, the UN pointed out that “more than 700 journalists were killed over the past 10 years for being full-time journalists, simply because they strived to inform the public and keep them up-to-date with the news.”
Currently, with the conflict in countries like Syria, Iraq or even the Ukraine, journalists are regularly wounded or killed, or kept as hostages. The day aims to heighten awareness of these issues.
The Luxembourgish Commission for UNESCO has taken the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists as an opportunity to highlight its solidarity with UNESCO’s message and the aims of this action plan which entails taking all necessary measures to put an end to this situation.
