On Thursday 27 October 2016, the College of the Mayor and Aldermen welcomed Dr. Denis Mukwege at the town hall of the Ville de Luxembourg.

Dr. Denis Mukwege is a Congolese gynaecologist and human rights activist who was the winner of the EU’s Sakharov Prize in 2014 for his efforts to help raped women in the Congo.

In order to support Dr. Mukwege’s efforts in this area, the Ville de Luxembourg will give a subsidy to Panzi Hospital in Bukavu, in the Congo, which was founded and is managed by the doctor himself. The hospital specialises in the treatment of women who have been gang-raped by rival Congolese tribes. Indeed, Dr. Mukwege has become the world’s leading expert in this field.
