On Wednesday 12 October 2016, Minister François Bausch presented the new signposting system for cycling in Luxembourg, in Useldange.
There are several reasons behind the new project, namely the fact that good signage is an essential element of a good cycling network. In addition, the current signposting system is incomplete and inadequate compared to neighbouring countries.
The project mainly focuses on cycling as a part of daily mobility. It aims to inform cyclists on the nearest cycle paths at each intersection. As part of this new signage concept, the national cycle network will introduce around 1,000 new signs as well as pictograms sharing valuable and practical information such as links to public transport and areas of mixed traffic or with several routes.
The new signs also apply to national routes, equipped by the Road Administration, along with municipal bike paths.
The decision to present the news in Useldange was no accident; its church represents the 19 municipalities of the project “The West by Bike” (Luxembourgish: “Mam Vëlo am Westen“) which effectively links bike paths to one another.
