The 189th Émaischen Easter Market was held earlier today, Monday 28 March 2016, in front of the Grand Ducal Palace and in the old parts of Luxembourg city.
The “Peckvillercher", as they are colloquily known - the locally produced ceramic bird whistles that draw people to this yearly event. Over the years a wide variety of these “Peckvillercher" have been created and every year a few more variations of those that could be considered traditional find their way onto the stalls, giving rise to lion whistles, dragon whistles and so many others. Additionally, one “Peckvillercher" is produced every year that is considered the official bird whistle of the year.
Those who braved the inclement weather today, to attend the Émaischen craft market, could also enjoy a host of stalls also selling all manner of items other than the bird whistles - including scarves, bags, soap, jewellery, perfumed pellets and other knick-knacks - along with the typical market food and entertainment in the form of different folk groups who sang, played music and danced in front of the Grand Ducal Palace.
That this year’s market was frequently visited by gusts of wind that threatened to overturn stalls did not hinder the events.
Nospelt, in the west of the Grand Duchy, also held its traditional Émaischen Easter Market in its village which experienced similar weather and crowds.
