Almost 7,000 individuals have taken part in an online game designed to promote safe driving since it was launched in March earlier this year.

The mobile application 'Game of Roads' was developed by Motion-S, as part of an initiative from Bâloise Assurances and the University of Luxembourg to combat traffics accidents caused by the carelessness and lack of awareness of inexperienced drivers. The App won Motion-S, a start-up company formed by Dr. Raphael Frank of the University of Luxembourg's SnT Centre, the Mind & Market Competition over the summer.

By combining GPS, smartphone accelerometers and mobile technologies, the Game of Roads application becomes a form of virtual instructor, monitoring respect for speed, driving flexibility and observation priorities. Since the spring opening of the application, participants have travelled more than 3.8 million kilometres in just over 211,000 safer, more responsible and fuel efficient journeys.

Bâloise Assurances stated that all too often drivers overestimate their driving ability, with their concentration slacking as they travel on a familiar road they might be passing for the hundredth time. The insurance company therefore claimed that large-scale prevention would remain the best form of security in combatting these dangers.

From March to October 2015, Bâloise Assurances and Motion-S presented the Game of Roads application as a game, allowing voluntary drivers to test their driving and watch it improve over months and gain points. The big finale of the game took place on the Colmar-Berg circuit on Saturday 17 October 2015, where winner George Beffort was awarded the honorific title of 'Best Driver of Luxembourg' and a Mini Cooper car for his efforts.
