The English-language opera Picture a Day Like This will premiere at the Grand Théâtre in Luxembourg-Limpertsberg on Friday 28 February 2025 at 20:00; a second performance is scheduled for Sunday 2 March 2025 at 17:00.
Picture a Day Like This is the fourth opera of George Benjamin and Martin Crimp. The piece has garnered widespread acclaim since it premiered at the 2023 Aix-en-Provence Festival.
Synopsis: The poignant fable unfolds as a mother mourning the death of her child goes on a quest to find one truly happy person, as she is told this will bring the infant back to life. But happiness is elusive. Seamlessly crafted, the opus draws inspiration from several ancient oriental and European tales. Like in H.C. Andersen’s 'The Story of a Mother', the mother’s surreal journey, meeting various characters, ends in a garden - where it transpires that there are no just answers to grief.
Corinna Niemeyer, who assisted George Benjamin during the creation, conducts the Orchestre de Chambre du Luxembourg (OCL), accompanied by an international cast, including Marianne Crebassa in the role of the mother. Daniel Jeanneteau and Marie-Christine Soma co-direct.
This one-hour-long opera is in English with surtitles in French and English. Jérôme Wigny will deliver an introduction (in English) half an hour prior to each performance. George Benjamin and Martin Crimp will be present for the premiere on 28 February.
