The premiere of the opera Queen of the Air, dedicated to pioneering female pilot Amelia Earhart, will take place on Saturday 8 March 2025 (International Women’s Day) at Théâtre des Capucins in Luxembourg-Ville at 18:00.
This opera is a co-commission by the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg and the United Instruments of Lucilin, with music by local composer Albena Petrovic. The libretto is by Matthias Theodor Vogt, based on the original poems of Amelia Earhart.
According to the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg website: "In Queen of the Air, composer Albena Petrovic, the United Instruments of Lucilin ensemble and mezzo-soprano Luisa Mauro, a descendant of a family of aviators, immerse us [the audience] in the fascinating world of Amelia Earhart. Presented at the Théâtre des Capucins on the occasion of International Women's Rights Day, this monodrama pays tribute to an exceptional, influential and inspiring figure."
The opera's storyline follows Amelia Earhart, an American aviator who made history as the first woman to fly alone over the Atlantic Ocean, and who mysteriously disappeared during a flight in 1937. "More than just an aviator, Amelia symbolises the desire to surpass the human condition and reach unattainable heights, much like Icarus in Greek mythology. Like him, she flew towards the sun and in her pursuit, she left an indelible mark on collective memory," noted the Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg.
