The first week at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris was something of a mixed bag for Luxembourgish athletes.
The biggest disappointment surely came when Jeanne Lehair was forced to retire from the women's triathlon from 4th place part way through the cycling section with a mechanical failure. As arguably Luxembourg's best chance of a medal, this was a bitter blow both for contestant and country.
Several valiant efforts across archery, table tennis, equestrianism and track and field ultimately saw elimination, with a particular mention for Ni Xia Lian, who at 61 years of age managed to qualify for the women's table tennis last 32 before being eliminated by eventual finalist Sun Yingsha.
The highlight of the first week was when sprinter Patrizia van der Weken qualified for the women's 100m semi-finals, by coming second in her heat (11.14 seconds). On Saturday 3 August 2024, she finished fourth in her heat (11.13 seconds) but missed out on qualifying for the final.
Cyclist Alex Kirsch also represented Team Lëtzebuerg on Saturday, finishing 40th in the men's road race (06:26.57). Christine Majerus finished the women's road race on Sunday 4 August 2024 in 17th place (04:04.23).
On Monday 5 August 2024, Ruben Querinjean represented Luxembourg in Round 1 of the men's 3000m steeplechase. He finished in ninth place (08:27.97), missing out on qualifying for the final.
Vera Hoffmann is the final Luxembourgish athlete to compete, in athletics - 1500m women round 1 on Tuesday 6 August 2024.
