On Wednesday 17 August 2016 Syd tha Kyd’s soulful and soft, yet full of swagger, voice filled the interior of the Rotondes as she performed with the other five members of The Internet who hail from Los Angeles.
The band’s neo-soul and hip hop sound got the whole crowd dancing and swaying to the beats of their songs. The song “Get Away” was one of the first songs to be played, introducing us to Syd tha Kyd’s heartfelt and sensual lyrics. As she sings “Let’s get away” the smooth yet upbeat sounds of the bass and the melody really does take you away, characteristic of the album “Ego Death”.
Matt Martians started the show by appealing to the audience’s emotional side saying “It’s a beautiful country you have here” and immediately charmed everyone in attendance. The band members approached the crowd many times throughout the show and inspired the whole crowd to laugh as Jameel Bruner and Matt Martians smoked from an abnormally huge e-cigarette handed to them by one member of the crowd.
“This next song is for my ex-girlfriend and the next is for my other ex-girlfriend,” Syd tha Kyd said as she asked us all to sing the following words “you f*cked up” directed to one of her ex-girlfriends in the States. The way in which she addressed the crowd gave a very personal touch to their show.
The band further played two of their most popular songs right now “Girl” and “Special Affair” that are also about Syd tha Kyd’s lusts and desires, and she uses her voice to get the seductive undertones through.
The members of the band were also seen strolling around the foreground of the Rotondes before and after the show, open to being approached by their fans and to have their picture taken. This may only have been possible given the size of the venue (Rotondes) and the comparatively small amount of people who attended.
Given the very few people singing along to their big hits suggests that their number of fans in Luxembourg may still be relatively small. However, the band’s charm and sound did not fail to inspire people to dance and smile throughout the 90-minute concert.
The character of the venue also helped to contribute to the relaxed, summery atmosphere of the whole concert. In the foreground of Rotondes people were sitting on picnic tables enjoying their drinks and listening to the support act DJ Lowic - who played various hip hop tunes and UK grime beats.
