On Thursday 26 March 2026, the Grand Ducal Police announced that as the motorcycle season approaches, it will carry out checks focusing in particular on motorcyclists, from Friday 27 March 2026.

The Grand Ducal Police detailed that equipment, the general technical condition of vehicles, as well as vehicle documents will, among other things, be checked during these inspections.

According to the police, the break during the winter period, marked by poor weather conditions, inevitably results in a large proportion of drivers lacking practice. In addition, motorcycling is often considered a leisure activity undertaken occasionally during sunny periods or at weekends. Consequently, for a majority of motorcyclists, this lack of practice constitutes a risk factor for accidents.

The police highlighted that motorcyclists are among the most vulnerable road users and in the event of an accident, the motorcyclist is exposed to a higher risk of injury than a car driver. Among other reasons, one is that they are not surrounded by a protective body shell and can easily be thrown several metres away.

Motorcyclists can also present a very narrow profile for car drivers, their speed is difficult to estimate and they can easily be in the blind spot of a car, lorry or bus. Defensive and anticipatory riding is therefore regarded as essential for motorcyclists, especially, but not only, at the start of the season, as well as increased vigilance on the part of all road users.

The police emphasised that before returning to the road after a long break, it is important to check the technical condition of the vehicle, in particular the tyres, brakes, lighting, fluids (e.g. oil level) and the battery. In addition, it is recommended to ensure that protective clothing is in good condition and to wear an approved helmet, which is mandatory.
